Uruguay : The Good Life at a Friendly Price
Last November, the Legatum Institute classified Uruguay as the most prosperous country in Latin America. Considering North, Central, and South America. It is ranked 3rd, right after Canada and the United States. The classification is not based solely upon economics. Instead, many factors are considered, including: economy, entrepreneurship and opportunity, education, health, safety, security, personal freedom, and social capital. This study shows Uruguay to be a promising country! But what is it really like living here?
After traveling and living in several countries in the world – France where I am from, Argentina, Spain, Australia, New Zealand and Canada – Uruguay was an easy place to live. Safe and quiet, it is quite inspiring. My daily life here is nothing really exceptionnal, but it is peaceful and fulfilling. During the day, I work from home, thanks to a fast, high-quality Internet connection. Once I get done, I can have a walk in the surrounding hills, have a sea bath or visit some friends who live in the area.
Not a fan of cars, I love how easy it is to travel by bus in Uruguay. From Piriapolis, I can easily go to Maldonado, Punta del Este, or Montevideo thanks to a good bus transportation system. And, bus ticket prices are quite cheap when compared to western countries! Getting to Argentina is also simple by bus and boat. Even thought it is not very far away, it makes me feel like being on holiday, just taking my time and enjoying crossing the Rio de la Plata.
Food in Uruguay is also very enjoyable. Milk, yogurt and cheese are on my top 3 of good things to eat here in Uruguay. They are all very good quality and locally produced! Fruits and vegetables bought in a Feria (market) are a good bargain and really tasty. Even though Argentinian meat is more famous, Uruguayan meat is of top quality and makes a great asado to share with family and friends. In the off-peak season, you can find unbelievable deals on choice cuts of meat!
Even in the busy summer season, you still get a lot for your money. Uruguay is a perfect place for people who are looking for a quality and peaceful life in a rather affordable country!
