To Mary,
Are you sitting down? You will have trouble accepting the prices of cars in Uruguay. This is caused mostly by the high import fees, maybe the size of the market too, but it's real. The prices, in US dollars for things like this, range from $5,000 for a decent, tiny car. A fiat Uno that may be 15 years old. Wanting more room or weight as well as anything approaching recently new can easily be $10,000 and keep looking up to $20 and beyond. New vehicles that are small to mid-size for North Americans like Volkswagon's, Honda's and such start around $25,000. I've heard that prices, especially for used vehicles, are dropping fast in the states since the crash. Here no such luck. There are few cars and people hold on to them as long as possible. The registration fees, 'potente' are high, the newer the car, the higher the fee. Sales tax is 22% on almost everything, factor that in. Oh and by the way, gas is like $6. a gallon. Also, you must garage your car here. Happy Motoring.
Beep beep.

Hi Syd, An excellent idea and I always enjoy your articles! I'm excited about Uruguay and would like to retire there so took a look at the BROU website. I'd like to move $ from my account in the US into a time deposit in national currency as you suggest to meet the income requirements and also to hold funds until we find a place to buy. It looks like I'd need to set up a distance account to do this but BROU says they've suspended these types of accounts for now. Any way I can do this from afar? Or can I set up an account with internet access when I'm there and move $ when I get back? Since I'm not yet a resident, what will I need to bring? I'm working diligently on Spanish but I'm not quite there yet for a task like setting up an account and getting it right. Can you recommend a branch that might hablan Inglés?
